James Gunn Denies Planning Henry Cavill's Exit from Superman Role

James Gunn, director of the upcoming Superman movie and the hit series Peacemaker, is taking a break from filming to address fan theories on social media. A recent theory claimed Gunn had always planned to replace Henry Cavill as Superman.

This speculation arose after comments by actor Nathan Fillion, who will portray Green Lantern in Gunn's new DC movie. Fillion mentioned in a Collider interview that Gunn offered him the role at the premiere party for The Suicide Squad back in 2021. Fans pointed to this as evidence that Gunn already had plans for a new DC universe cast, including a different Superman.

Gunn directly addressed this theory on social media, clarifying that he had no intention of taking over DC Studios, let alone replacing Cavill, at the time of The Suicide Squad premiere. He explained that his involvement with DC came about much later, alongside producer Peter Safran.

"The fact is, I had no interest in running DC until Peter decided to do it with me," Gunn stated. "He could handle the executive stuff, and I could focus on the creative side."

He further emphasized that the new Superman film was always envisioned as a fresh story with a new actor. "When I was hired to write Superman, it was always intended as a new Superman story," Gunn said. "So why would I lie about not planning that at the Suicide Squad premiere?"

Cavill's departure from the role of Superman surprised many fans. In 2022, he made a cameo appearance as Superman in the movie Black Adam, seemingly solidifying his place in the DC universe. However, with Gunn and Safran's arrival at DC Studios, a new direction was chosen, leading to the recasting of Superman with David Corenswet.

While some fans remain disappointed with Cavill's exit, Gunn's comments offer a clearer picture of the decision-making process. He wasn't secretly planning a Superman reboot all along; the new film is simply a fresh take on the Man of Steel.
